Best Kdrama Kiss Scenes

One of the things that I genuinely appreciate about kdramas in contrast to Hollywood romantic comedies is that they are pretty clean.  Hollywood movies often rely on a random sex scene to drive the relationship forward, and while I'm sure some relationships start with an accidental drunken rendezvous, these scenes aren't really representative of most healthy long-term relationships I know.  Kdramas, on the other hand, tend to focus on building relationships, and the rare sex scenes are implied rather than explicit.  There is some debate on whether this overarching chastity sends the wrong message (I read an article about this yesterday, but I can't find it now), but I think overall, it actually sends healthier messages about sex and relationships.

That being said, nothing drives me crazier than the lack of passion in some dramas.  When the female lead stands with her eyes wide open as the man inches towards her face and then they barely brush lips, it's infuriating.  THIS IS NOT HOW REAL RELATIONSHIPS WORK, PEOPLE! I'm not saying that they need to rip each others' clothes off during the first date, but when people are in love (and especially when they overcome absurd plot hurdles for that love), physical desire is a manifestation of that emotional connection.

Just like a bad kdrama kiss can undermine the emotional payout of the show, a good kiss filled with passion makes the whole thing worth watching.  So, for those of you tired of frozen lip-bumps, here is a countdown of the best gut-flipping, knee-melting kisses we've seen in kdramas. (I have included video where I could find good ones, but I would recommend just watching these dramas instead of spoiling the surprise. The build-up is half the fun!)

10.  A Gentleman's Dignity: The Window Kiss

I love this series, and it had a lot of solid kissing to choose from (And a good thing, too!  There's no need to be shy when you're 40!), but I think my personal favorite was the window kiss.  For one thing, I love that he gives her a mini warning kiss to shut her up before really going in for the kill.  For another thing, this was the first time in the series when they were both really invested.  The combination made me so happy for these characters who I had really grown to love.

9.  Secret Garden: Party Kiss

Now, I know that a lot of people actually prefer the famous foam kiss to the one at the party.  The foam kiss is probably more memorable, but I decided to veto it for two reasons: 1. In practical terms, licking food off of someone else's face seems unsanitary and gross, and 2. She didn't want to be kissed at this point in the series. The forcible kiss is rampant in kdramas, and I think that's kind of a problem (for a great explanation on why it bothers me, read this awesome post that explains it better than I could). On the other hand, this party kiss is filled with passion on both sides, especially since he basically just said, "Screw it--I'm in love with you."

8. My Lovely Sam Soon: First Kiss

I remember when I was first dating my husband and he told me that he always just waited until girls went crazy and kissed him first.  As soon as he said that, I vowed that I would never, ever make the first move (and I won on that one, by the way).  Even though making the first move isn't my style, I kind of like when kdrama girls take the initiative.  The poster child for this one is Sam Soon.  She doesn't let anyone boss her around in other areas in her life, so when her boss taunts her, it's only natural that she would take control of the situation.

7. My Princess: The Airplane Kiss

The first kiss in the series was somewhat underwhelming, but the chemistry definitely improved as time went on.  Here's another example of the girl taking the initiative, and it's both playful and romantic.  This is the last scene in the whole series, and if every series ended this way, I would be thrilled!
Bonus points for his flailing arms

6. Personal Taste: "Game Over" Kiss

As I said in my review of this series, this kiss was probably the best part of the whole thing.  I don't know that it's worth watching the entire series just for the kiss, so let me tell you the important parts.  Lee Min Ho pretends to be gay, and then this kiss happens, and then blah blah.  Just watch this on repeat and skip the rest.

5. Goong: The IT'S ABOUT FREAKING TIME Kiss

Goong/Princess Hours felt like it stretched on for eternity, and by the time I got to episode 23, I was really, really ready to be done.  This kiss was like patting a kid on the head and giving him or her a lollipop after getting a shot.  Some people would say the lollipop was worth the pain. Others would say it was too little, too late.  I'm on the fence about the series, but man-oh-man,  Yoon Eun Hye is the best in the biz when it comes to returning the passion and not leaving the man to do all of the work. I somehow couldn't find a video that wasn't in slow mo.  Sorry?  Or you're welcome?

4. Coffee Prince: Man or Alien Kiss

I know we've talked about the kisses in Coffee Prince before, so you had to know this was coming.  In their first kiss, Han Kyul doesn't even know that Eun Chan is a girl, and yet somehow Gong Yoo still sells this scene.  Of course Yoon Eun Hye pulls her weight as well, which explains how she ended up in 3 of the top 5 kisses on this list.

3. Flower Boy Ramyun Shop: The Movie Theater Kiss

This series is a perfect example of how good physical chemistry can really help elevate a show that would otherwise be average (or below average, depending on how creeped out you were by the whole teacher-student thing).  Maybe this should be lower on the list because she isn't into it at first, but his commitment won me over. I mean, the man rides in on a motorcycle to sweep her off her feet. There are plenty of videos of this kiss, but you really need to have the subtitles to catch the full effect.  She is unimpressed with his first kiss--until he tells her that he isn't finished yet.
I think it's safe to say that she was impressed this time.

Also of note in this drama is the kimchi kiss.  I don't think Eun Bi was the only one whose legs buckled a little at that one.  Then again, the same principle applies here that applied to the foam kiss: Sure, it seems hot at first, but now your face is covered in kimchi AND spit.

2. Prosecutor Princess: Confession Kiss

Holy moly.  The further I get into this countdown, the more my heart is melting into a bowl full of gelatin.  The kiss in Prosecutor Princess is filled with waist-grabbing angst.  They're angry at themselves for being in love, but they let loose for a minute anyway before coming back to breathless reality. It's impulsive and passionate and all-around awesome.

Ladies, note that her eyes are CLOSED.
Thank you for showing us how it's done.

1. Lie to Me: Karaoke Kiss/Cola Kiss

I agonized over which kiss to choose from this series.  The cola kiss is more generally popular, but the the karaoke kiss was what really sold me on this show.  In both scenes, it's this intense, immediate realization of attraction that leads to on-screen magic.  I have yet to see anything that beats them, though I welcome suggestions for competitors!

Which of these kisses was your favorite? Are there any more passionate drama kisses out there that we should check out?

  1. This post made me all kinds of giddy! It had me sitting here plotting how to get my Korean ex-boyfriend back as I ate my third bowl of lucky charms. No one should ever watch that many Kdrama kiss scenes in a row! It's dangerous. Also, I had a serious moral dilemma about whether I should vote for Coffee Prince or Lie to Me. I just can't help how much I love Coffee Prince, though.

    1. LOL We shared a dilemma. I love Coffee Prince but I chose Lie to Me...and then I felt bad. I couldn't decide between the two so I chose Lie To Me because it had more kisses. ^_^

Seeing this blog is the perfect end to an otherwise lackluster day.

    2. I've haven't seen lie to me yet but all those kisses makes me think that its going to be fantastic

  2. SO many kisses to choose from! XD The Alien Kiss in Coffee Prince is among my all-time faves, and also, I think the closing kiss in Lie To Me is particularly sexy, especially the moment when he pulls her in even closer. Swooonn~~

Goong was first kdrama, and I think I know why all the vids are in slo-mo. When the kiss happened, I distinctly remember it looking uncomfortable to my eyes. Yet, now that I see it in slo-mo, it's MUCH sexier. My conclusion is that at regular speed, the 2 were rushing it a little, so it didn't look as good as it does in slo-mo. Just my theory, of course. Some folks like a faster kiss, I'm sure ;) heh.

    1. I agree. All the kisses in Lie to Me were pretty fantastic. Have you seen the making of video for the Cola Kiss? The actors actually look kind of awkward around each other in real life. Must mean they really are good actors!

Also, I saw that you guys are blogging for DramaFever! Congrats!

  3. Lovers, starring Kim Jung Eun and Lee Seo Jin, has amazing chemistry going on. This would be a strong contender for best "almost" kiss (episode 10), as well as best first kiss(episode 15)and best not-so-g-rated kiss(episode 18-19). With Chi Yeol's "Go Hae" playing in the background, it's really swoon-worthy. Trust me, there's a reason this is one of the most popular Kdramas of all time.

    1. I somehow had never heard of this series! Is it a melodrama? I sometimes have a hard time with those, but I might have to check it out anyway for the chemistry!

  4. Ah, but it's an action gangster melodrama with just enough humor to make it palatable (think Arnold movies). And a fiesty heroine who is able to get misty-eyed without indulging in a sob fest. Give it a try!

    1. My mom recommended that one to me too so I think I'll add it to my list! Also, for some reason, some of your comments end up getting marked as spam. Not sure why that is happening.

  5. Lie to Me and Coffee Prince are my all-time favorites! It's for the exact reason that you listed; Yoon Eun Hye has this way of selling "the dream" in every show. It feels real, and just makes any show amazing to watch. I nearly ripped my hair trying to vote on my favorite since you put both Coffee Prince and Lie to Me in the same poll :D.

P.S. Yes, frozen kisses with Bambi-eyes are extremely frustrating -.-

But there's soooo many other series on my to-watch list (I hate you college for keeping me away from my kdramas). What's a gal to do! lol

  7. Besides the terrible, awful kisses (as seen above in the first picture), you should totally check out Heartstrings. The plot is actually good, the characters are attractive, and the music is freaking amazing. I think you mentioned somewhere that you like Kdrama soundtracks, and I know I wanted all the music off this one.

    3. I would rank Queen In Hyun's Man possibly 1st. The chemistry is amazing. If not 1st definitely 2nd. It's so hard to choose!...

  9. mary stayed out all night has a pretty good pash scene when the main characters are running away from people and they hide from them. nice strong kiss from jang geun suk :)

  10. You should check out the kissing scenes in the greatest love and city hall....sizzling

    ReplyDelete
  11. Queen In-Hyun's Man has some good kisses :) I especially loved the tie one and the tiptoe one. This is another example of a girl doing her part!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Another realy good kiss was between Jae Hee(Yoon Shi Yoon) and Bong Sun (Lee Ji Ah) in "me too, flower" ep.6, the way he first forces the kiss but then when she kisses him back he gets stunned for a moment is priceless. In my opinion it was the best!!
By the way I love yong hwa but he is the worst kisser ever, not that park shin hye was of any help, but at least when she was with yoon shi yoon in flowerboy nextdoor the kisses where nice, so in my opinion Yoon Shi Yoon should be given the award of best kisser in dramaland ^.^

  13. Game over Kiss...

Lee Min Ho really looks gorgeous in Personal Taste..Looks Mature, charming...i played over n over on that scene.... "game over" the he kissed her....argghh!!!

Of all drama that minho played on it, i think that personal taste is the best!!! hairstyle is just fit in him...i dont like too much hairstyle...

When i look Boys over flowers, just so so with Lee Min Ho, but after i see this Personal Taste Drama....geezz mannnn, he blew my mind...

  14. I love the Secret Garden party kiss! IT WAS DAEBAK, I COULD NOT HELP GETTING FEELS!! <3<3<3 HYUNBIN KISSED MAGNIFICENTLY, AND HA JIWON KISSED BACK WELL TOO<3

To me though, the BEST KISSER EVER IS JANG KEUNSUK<3 I admit he is my bias ;) But, really! Admin, did you watch Love Rain???It has lots of awesome fantastic KISS SCENES!! Have you seen the fountain kiss scene in episode 9? IT IS SUPER GOOD! Yoona kind of kissed back too, but I loved her reaction(she dropped her back) and when the sprinklers turned on and they got wet, and the girl ran off, Jang Keunsuk ran and caught her and *SMOOCH* again<333 You really need to see it:D it's crazy:) Reply 1997 has good kiss scenes too, REALLY LOTS OF CHEMISTRY<3 YOU HAVE TO SEE IT! :D

  15. i love all your posts... I am from India & recently got hooked to K dramas..you share most of my point of views on these dramas...seriously kissing scenes are soo awkward in K dramas...i am just done watching boys over flower..female lead couldnt even give proper hug to the person she is shown to be in love with :p.

but kissing scene options you gave are really the best i have seen soo far.. i think it shard to pick between lie to me & cofee prince. but i still pick lie to me it just made go to my hubby & kiss him like that..

  16. Nice to see someone else giving the Karaoke kiss the edge over the cola kiss in Lie To Me. Both are awesome, but the dramatic impact of the karaoke scene is much greater. It's still my favourite scene from the whole series. Fine choice!

  18. I just finished watching The Greatest Love...and I have to say their kissing scenes are spot on as well. Of course, nothing I've seen yet compare to Lie to Me and Coffee Prince in term of kissing, but I'm continually searching :) And it's true that most kissing scene in Korean drama is frustrating to say the least...what's with the stiff body stance and peck on the lips when they are suppose to be madly in love with each other?

    ReplyDelete
  19. The tiptoe kiss in queen in hyun's man, I have to say is one of the best kisses, then I loved the karaoke kiss in lie to me. The fact that he just didn't care that there was an audience, he just had to kiss her then, wow, that made it hotter. Oh and the cinema kiss in flower boy ramyun shop. that kiss was hoot. In short, loved the kisses you mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am glad I found someone who agree with me. I think in k dramas should be much more love and passion between them when they kiss.

    ReplyDelete
  21. regarding the kdrama kisses where the female lead stands there wide-eyed, you have to understand from her perspective that she's probably just shocked since she didn't expect it. Using Heartstrings as an example since you used an image of it, Kyu Won didn't expect Shin to kiss her after he sang for her at all. Also, in Kdramas, when you have the guy who likes the girl but the girl doesn't know he likes her, of course she'll look like a fish out of water when he kisses her out of the blue. Even I would be like that if a guy I considered to be a friend suddenly told me he likes me and kiss me from out of nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love kdramas but the lack of physical contact in some and the totally unrealistic/fake physical contact in others drives me crazy. My biggest pet peave is the dead hug, my term for when a guy hugs a girl and she stands there like a tree with no reaction, even when she reciprocates his feelings.

    SPOILERS about Boys over flowers:

For example in BoF in the very last minute of the drama they are supposed to be already married and she is even pregnant, yet when he hugs her she still stands there like a plank of wood with her arms straight down to her sides like she is some soulless robot. wth?

    1. The last minute of Boys Over Flowers? The final episode I saw doesn't end like that at all. The episode 25 I have ends with Gun Ju Pyo proposing on the beach then the rest of F4 join them for a curtain call style fadeout.

  23. I'm a fan of the kiss at the end of the first episode of They Kiss Again and the kiss in City Hunter on the rooftop.

  24. Great kisses! Hyun Bin is my favorite. Even though the movie was a bit of a drag, his kiss in "Late Autumn" Should be in the hall of fame of movie kisses. It's epic, I can imagine it as part of that montage of kisses from the beautiful "Cinema Paradiso". I also think Jang Hyuk gives fantastic kisses. If you ever get to see him in 'Robbers' with Lee-Da Hae he gives some sweet ones in that.

  25. You have to add the kiss from Gu Family Book with Lee Seungi and Suzy !

  26. I've watched only three of these! So very sad :((
Loved the 'Goong' kiss - first genuine kiss i'd seen in any Korean drama. I liked the 'Personal Taste' kiss but hated the drama - I've never finished watching it.
I'm biased towards the Hyun Bin kiss only because I find him so very hot - and i've watched him in only one kdrama!

  27. I LOVE love Coffee Prince and Lie to Me and you're right about YEH returning the kiss and not making the actors do all the work. There a kissing scene at the end if Lie to Me where Ki Joon pulls Ah Jung closer to him while they are kissing and the way he angles his mouth over hers. I recently finished watching I Miss You and there is a scene in Episode 13 where Micky Yuchun kisses YEN against a wall.

  28. I just finished watching 7th grade civil servant a couple of weeks ago and there's a kiss that is so un-kdrama it's fantastic. Pil Hoon and Kyung Ja basically make out, on her bed, lying down! I almost died I was so happy. Please put that on the next version of this list. It's fantastic!

  29. "Yoon Eun Hye is the best in the biz when it comes to returning the passion and not leaving the man to do all of the work." I so totally agree with this statement, but I also think it has something to do with the guy also. I'm fangirling over Eun Hye and I've watched all of her kissing scenes. My favorites are Coffee Prince and Lie to Me. The other scenes are okay. I watched I Miss You and Micky Yoochun looks like he wants to chew on her mouth (no offense Micky fans). Gong Yoo and Kang Ji-hwan look like good kissers. I may be 10 years too late on this, but I love the love-line between YEH and Kim Jong Kook on X Man. *sigh* Eun Hye...fighting!

  35. "Heartless City" episode 10 - mercy me....

  36. I agreed with pretty much all your choices. However I would add a few of my own but since this is your post not mine :) can I just humbly suggest City Hall?!? The kiss they shared in the car (and actually in the rest of the series) was pretty amazing, I have to give props to Kim Sun Ah cause she can deliver as well. Not only can she reciprocate the passion but she looks natural doing it. I like Yoon Eun Hye but when she kisses, her body seems pretty stiff, her shoulders look like they're on lock down so as much as I like her, she doesn't always convince me on the passion. Just my opinion...

I love backgrab and kiss scenes, as seen in Youre the Best Lee Soon Shin as she confesses thinking he doesnt like her back and starts walking away, after which he runs after her, grabs her, turns her around, and they share a hot kiss (That was my first kdrama so it holds a special place in my heart, though I sure was glad to find out that not all kdramas have 50 something hour long episodes). Another great kiss scene is in Rooftop Prince when they are sitting on the stairs and before leaving he gently grabs her neck and pulls her into a longing ive-missed-you-so-much kiss. I would suggest checking those out and possibly adding them to the last.
