12 Things We Learned About Korea From Watching Kdramas

The first Kdrama I ever watched was Lie To Me, and the main reason I began watching it was because I didn't know anything about modern Korea and wanted to learn. And boy did I ever! I've even been teaching all the fans over on DramaFever's Facebook page. Here are 12 things I've learned about Korea from watching Kdramas.

What other fun, exaggerated things have you learned about Korea from watching Kdramas? What about American dramas? Comment below!

  1. Drinking is the national pastime, but it's ok because if you get drunk there's always someone of the opposite sex willing to give you a piggyback ride home and tuck you in bed.

  2. If you boyfriend has a brother or a close friend he'll fall for you too. You need to remove battery to turn off phone. Mothers are usually mean and stand in your way to happiness. A lobotomy is curable with a little TLC so are a lot of other things. Poor people are cute/quirky with hearts of gold, rich people are mean until they meet their poor soul mate. Bromances (you should make that your next blog). You know you found your Korean soul mate when he gives you a piggyback ride and you wear couple outfits.

    1. Oh, I do love a good bromance! I will write about it someday for sure.

  3. Koreans never notice when they are being followed or eavesdropped on.... even when the follower /listener is literally two steps behind them in plain sight.

    1. Like in You're Beautiful, when she even turns around and doesn't see him? That drove me crazy.

  4. No matter how poor the lead actress is, she is never going to wear the same dress twice. And the clothes look so spar-kingly clean and brand new......Makes me wonder which washing powder they use :p

    1. Haha so true! I would say the one exception was Personal Taste. You know that anyone wearing overalls has been saving them for a long time!

  5. My friends and I have been compiling a list of all the cliches and tropes from all our beloved K-dramas, and have decided that if we could just take them and string them in the right order, we'd have a whole new K-drama right there (although it would probably seem strangely familiar).

  6. Everyone gets nosebleeds and they are never explained...

  7. Can someone tell me which drama is the second to last one (1/3 of Korean men are heirs to family companies)? It looks interesting!

  9. No matter how poor the lead actress they always have the latest model phone like in heirs, making u-turns every where is acceptable as well as speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. If someone asks you must go with the person even if you don't like each other and you must get a drink with them

  10. Oooooh, "Lie to me" also was my first drama! At least it was the one that made me fall for k-dramas.

  11. If you stand in the middle of a quiet Korean road for more than three minutes, you will get hit by a semi-truck. If your rival requests to meet at a cafe and they are drinking a glass of water with no ice, they are going to throw that water in your face. The nicer you are to a Korean girl, the more likely she will end up with the guy you hate the most. The douchier you are to a Korean girl, she'll probably end up marrying you. No one in Korea calls the cops when they should. Bus rides in Korea make you sleepy and want to lean your head on the person next to you, no matter how long or short the trip is. Korean ramen tastes best off the lid of the pot. Rich chaebols are dicks. And my favorite: Korean men who cry are sexy!

  12. I've learned that no one sleeps with the lights off. I've never seen anyone turn the lights off before they go to bed. Are they all afraid of the dark?

  13. what I always find strange is that they always sleep in the clothes they go out with, they don't change into pjs or nightgowns

    1. And do you ever notice that they never sleep under the sheets? It's always under the comforter so I'm wondering how often they need to wash those heavy covers?

  14. Well! I learned that all lead male characters always find their girls no matter where they are. Be it in a snow filled mountain or a forest without trails.
